He studied at the Xiangtan University in the Hunan province, attended Peking University for graduate school, and obtained his Ph.D. at Cornell University from James H. Bramble. Currently, Xu works as a distinguished professor at the Pennsylvania State University and is an ISI highly cited researcher. Xu is a recipient of the Humboldt Prize and a SIAM fellow. He was an invited speaker in International Congress of Mathematicians 2010, Hyderabad.
